West 132nd Street Community Garden
Established in 1989, the West 132nd St Community Garden, situated in the Central Harlem West 130th – 132nd Streets Historic District, is a New York City Greenthumb garden, owned by the Department of Parks and Recreation, and independently managed by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. It was reclaimed by concerned neighbors from 4 litter-strewn lots, after 4 brownstones on the site were razed. The garden, designed as an oasis for quiet reflection and the peaceful enjoyment of nature, boasts perennial beds, shaded walkways, a goldfish pond, an expanse of lawn that stretches circuitously through the center and back portions of the garden, a dry stone wall, and a rotating collection of edible herbs, fruits, and vegetables.

Our story
We are a community-rooted nonprofit dedicated to cultivating green space, connection, and opportunity in the heart of Central Harlem. Since 1989, we have transformed four litter-strewn, brownstone-razed lots into a thriving oasis — proving that neighbors with vision and care can reclaim and renew the land around them.
Situated within the Central Harlem West 130th–132nd Streets Historic District, our garden is a New York City Greenthumb site, owned by the Department of Parks and Recreation and independently stewarded by our 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Every path, planting bed, and program reflects our belief that green space is essential infrastructure for a healthy, connected community.
A Living Sanctuary
Designed for quiet reflection and the peaceful enjoyment of nature, the garden features perennial beds, shaded walkways, a goldfish pond, a dry stone wall, and a sweeping lawn that winds circuitously through the center and rear grounds. A rotating collection of edible herbs, fruits, and vegetables keeps the garden as productive as it is beautiful.
Cultivating People, Not Just Plants
Our impact reaches beyond horticulture. The garden serves as a work site for New York City's Summer Youth Employment Program and community service placements, and we provide stipends to at-risk youth who help maintain the grounds — turning garden work into a pathway toward opportunity. Throughout the year, we host horticultural workshops, corporate volunteer days, and neighborhood cleanups that put resilience and stewardship into practice.
A Gathering Place
For decades, we've opened our gates to multi-genre musical performances, annual art exhibits, literary events, and film and fashion shoots, alongside birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, baby showers, and holiday celebrations. The garden belongs to the community it serves.
A Garden in Bloom
Our seasons unfold in color and fragrance. Spring opens quietly — forsythia and hellebores, then crocuses, daffodils, and tulips, with bluebells, vinca, ajuga, and variegated Solomon's seal filling in the shade. By summer, the garden is in full voice: roses and phlox, daylilies and irises, poppies, astilbe, bee balm, hollyhocks, and coneflower fill in the borders, accompanied by climbers, clematis and trumpet vine. Hydrangeas and crepe myrtles provide late season blooms. Water lilies rest on the pond. Crabapple blossoms, lilacs, casablanca lillies, and mock orange scent the air throughout the season.
